Another Pioneer Gone
Grandma Haughey Passes Away After Four Years of Helplessness

The community was shocked and saddened last Wednesday afternoon to hear of the sudden death of Grandma Haughey at her home east of town.  Although helpless from paralytic strokes for the past four years, she seemed unusually well.  She had very recently concluded a visit with her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Grant Haughey, in town.  It is supposed that a final attack of paralysis, coming without warning of any kind, caused her death.

Isabella Ann Leathers was born April 25, 1841 in Ashland county, Ohio.  She was married to Francis M. Haughey, Sept 10, 1857.  At the breaking out of the Civil War, Mr. Haughey joined the union army, serving with honor.  They were the parents of ten children of whom all are living except one, Grant M., who it will be remembered passed away while serving in the position of trust for the people of Routt county.   The surviving children are:  Mrs. Hannah Anderson of Marietta, Kansas; R. L. Haughey of Eureka, Calif; Mrs. W. A. Young of Leadville, Colo; J. S. Haughey and William Haughey of Portland, Oregon; and Ossa L. Cooper Oliver, Edwin and Maud Haughey of Craig.

The family came to Routt county some 26 years ago and located at the home ranch east of town.  They were among the early pioneers of the country and their generous hospitality soon made them a unanimous friendship among the early settlers.  Mrs. Haughey, always energetic and taking a leading part in the affairs of the community, exhibited a strength of character that made her a leader among the people as long as her health allowed her to participate actively in the interests of the home community.  In her home her counsels have been wise and the children reared there have gone forth into the world as sturdy citizens of whom their home communities have reason to be proud.

The funeral services were conducted at the home on July 5th.  Rev J. L. Ellis officiating.  Many pioneers of the valley were present, the oldest, Mr. E Shelton of Hayden, delivering an address eulogistic of the departed pioneer whom he had known so well during the trying days of early settlement.  The body was laid to rest in Fairview cemetery amid the mingled tears of friends and relatives who mourned her parting but rejoice that the sufferings of the one they loved and honored were past forever.

The relatives of Grandma Haughey desire to publicly express their appreciation of all the many kindnesses showed on the departed one by willing friends during the last years of her life.
